Constitutional Roots of the Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam

Although many questions arise regarding the material of the basic cultural knowledge exam, which will be required to obtain permanent residence from January 1st, 2025, it can be stated with certainty that the source of some of the material is to be found in the Fundamental Law, namely in the ‘Fundamental’ chapter.

What are the most important foundational principles from this chapter?

The name of our country is Magyarország (in Hungarian);

Hungary is an independent, democratic state governed by the rule of law, where power is derived from the people;

The capital of Hungary is Budapest;

Hungary’s territory is divided into the capital, counties (vármegyék), towns, and municipalities;

Within the capital and towns, districts may be established;

The official language in Hungary is Hungarian (magyar);

Hungary protects the Hungarian language;

Hungary has its own coat of arms and flag;

Hungary’s national holidays are:

  • 15th of March, commemorating the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49;

  • 20th of August, in memory of the foundation of the state and Saint Stephen, the founding king (the official state holiday);

  • 23rd of October, commemorating the Revolution and War of Independence of 1956;

Hungary’s official currency is the forint.

The title of the chapter itself already indicates that it regulates the most fundamental pillars of the state. Therefore, anyone seeking deeper knowledge of Hungarian culture should become familiar with its content.
