Hungarian Citizenship
General Description
On a general basis, a Hungarian Citizenship can be applied for an EEA national after living in Hungary for 8 years in the possession of an EEA Registration Certificate and a Hungarian address card. In some cases, an EEA national can apply for the Hungarian citizenship before this 8-year preliminary stay period expires. Please find further information below.
When can you apply for the Hungarian citizenship?
If you have been living in Hungary for at least 8 years in the possession of an EEA registration certificate and a Hungarian address card.
If you have been living in Hungary for at least 3 years in the possession of an EEA registration certificate and a Hungarian address card, and you have been living in a marriage with a Hungarian citizen for at least 3 years.
If you have been living in Hungary for at least 3 years in the possession of an EEA registration certificate and a Hungarian address card, and your minor child is a Hungarian citizen.
If you had an Hungarian citizen ancestry and you can prove your Hungarian language knowledge.
If you have been living in a marriage with a Hungarian citizen for at least 10 years and you can prove your Hungarian language knowledge.
If you have been living in a marriage with a Hungarian citizen for at least 5 years, you have a common child and you can prove your Hungarian language knowledge.
If you have been living in Hungary for at least 5 years in the possession of an EEA registration certificate and a Hungarian address card, and you were born in the territory of Hungary or you received a Hungarian address card when you were under 18.
Place of Application
The place of the citizenship application is in the Government Office (in Hungarian: 'Kormányablak') in person.
Application Fee
The application has no government fee.
Time period of decision-making:
There is no prescribed deadline for the decision-making. Generally, the decision is made within 6-9 months
