Planning to enter Hungary soon? Here’s what you need to know about the new financial coverage rules.

According to a modified decree, from July 15 onwards, the required financial coverage for entry into Hungary increases significantly to 40 euros per day of the planned stay. Here are the most common questions we’ve received – and the answers that can help you prepare.

According to Section 24 of Decree 9/2024. (II.29.) from the Ministry of Interior, from July 15 onwards, the required financial coverage for entry into Hungary will be 40 euros per day of the planned stay. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous requirement of 10,000 HUF per entry.

Naturally, many of you had questions about what this means in practice. Here are the most common ones we’ve received – and the answers that can help you prepare:

Is it only applicable in view of short-term tourist visas (C-Visa)? - Unfortunately, the current legislation defines the concept of 40 euros as a 'guideline amount' and does not limit its application to short-term visas (e.g. C visa). Thus, in its current form, the rule requires the existence of daily cover for each residence permit. However, there is a possibility of deviation in the consideration of the 'guideline amount'.

Does the obligation also apply to long-term residence permits where you receive income? - In our preliminary opinion, the authority should take future regular income into account when considering the daily allowance. In our firm opinion, it cannot be expected that in the case of a residence permit for the purpose of employment the authority should require the appropriate multiple of the daily allowance for several years in advance. Furthermore, in our preliminary opinion, the authority should take future regular income - as well as scholarships - into account when considering the daily allowance.

Does the obligation also apply to family members? - 40 euros is counted per capita. This means that all of the family members must comply with the ruling.
