The Hungarian permanent residency is very popular for third-country nationals and it is quite understandable. You have many advantages if you have this kind of residency:

you will be entitled to stay in Hungary for an indefinite period of time;

you will be get hired or change your job freely, without any immigration or working authorisation requirement;

you will be entitled to have a Hungarian national ID card and a Hungarian address card;

you will be entitled to apply for a Hungarian higher education program, sponsored by the Hungarian government.

Usually, you have to meet the following criteria to apply for a National Permanent Residence Permit:

you stayed in Hungary in the last three years;

during this three-year period, you did not leave the territory of Hungary for more than 270 days in total and/or four months per occasion;

throughout this three-year period, you always had a valid Hungarian residence permit;

at the time of the prospective National Permanent Residence Permit application, you have a valid Hungarian residence permit.

Nonetheless, you do not have to wait three years to start the application process if you have a valid Hungarian residence permit (even if it is a recently issued one) and if you have a Hungarian spouse with whom you have been married for two years at least. The situation is the same if you have a third-country national spouse with permanent resident status in Hungary.


National permanent residence permits may be issued for the spouse of a Hungarian citizen or a third-country national with immigrant or permanent resident status or who has been granted asylum, provided that the marriage was contracted at least two years before the application was submitted.


It is really important that the Hungarian marriage certificate has to be submitted during the application process. If the marriage certificate is issued by a foreign authority, it has to be naturalized by the responsible Hungarian authority.
