New guest-Worker Residence Permit will not be applicable, but it can be extended. New Residence Permit for the purpose of Employment and its extension remains applicable.
New Guest-Worker Residence Permits cannot be applied for from 6th June 2026. Guest-Worker Residence Permit and Residence Permit for the purpose of Employment, which were already valid, as well as applications of these permits that were already in-process on 5th June 2026, can be extended later on. Employment-purpose residence permits remain available for the currently eligible nationalities, the Philippines, Georgia and Armenia.
Following the publication of the recent amendments to the Hungarian immigration legislation, we would like to share a brief overview of the main changes affecting guest worker and employment-purpose residence permits.
- New guest-worker residence permits will no longer be available for third-country nationals. As a result, the issuance of new guest-worker permits will not be applicable.
- First time employment-purpose residence permits remain available for nationals of the countries that were already eligible under the previous framework: Philippines, Georgia and Armenia.
- Existing guest-worker residence permits and employment-purpose residence permits remain valid. The legislative amendment does not affect permits that were issued before its entry into force, and holders may continue to reside and work in Hungary in accordance with the conditions and validity period of their permits.
- Guest-worker residence permits that were valid on 5 June 2026 may still be extended. This transitional protection also applies to certain cases of re-issuance provided by law.
- Employment-purpose residence permits that were valid on 5 June 2026 may also be extended, and the relevant re-issuance rules remain applicable.
- Applications that were already pending on 5 June 2026 are protected by the transitional provisions. Consequently, residence permits issued as a result of guest-worker or employment-purpose applications that were already under assessment on this date may subsequently be extended as well.
