Extension of Study Residence Permit Required When Changing Institution or Degree Programme

When changing programme or higher education institution, the student must initiate the extension of their study residence permit.

It is a realistic scenario that the chosen programme or higher education institution does not meet expectations, and the student wishes to transfer to another programme within the institution, or to the study programme of another higher education institution.

For a third-country national pursuing studies in Hungary with a residence permit for the purpose of studies, such a transfer also requires immigration-related actions:

If a third-country national holding a study residence permit intends to continue their studies at a different higher education institution than the one indicated in their previous application, or in a different programme launched by the same institution, then—subject to proving the further legal conditions—they must submit an application for the extension of the residence permit.

If the actual purpose of stay differs from what was stated in the earlier application for residence permit, the immigration authority may revoke the issued residence permit. In view of this, it is particularly important to keep in mind that if the immigration authority has already initiated the procedure for revocation of the residence permit, the extension of the residence permit can no longer be initiated.

It is therefore advisable, in the case of a change of higher education institution or a change of programme within the institution, to initiate the application for extension during the active semester of the studies pursued in the programme to be left.

Ensuring the continuous lawfulness of stay of third-country nationals requires conscious and careful planning and a preventive mindset.
