Leadership competencies. What makes an effective leader?
Study shows that moral standards and clear goals are the top leadership competencies
Dr. Sunnie Giles made an interesting research concerning the most important competencies of a leader. Her thoughts were published by the Harvard Business Review. Giles asked around 200 leaders from 15 countries. The respondents had to choose the 15 most important leadership competencies from a list of 74. The top choices may not surprise the readers. More than 60% of the leaders have choosen the „high ethical an moral standards” as the most important competency. The second most popular answer was „providing clear goals and directions”, undisputable that a strong and effective leader needs a good and productive team, which team knows the most important goals clearly and capable to work by itself. Nonetheless, the list contains interesting answers as well, “Being committed to my ongoing training” and “helping me grow into a next-generation leader”. These answers show that the current leaders are aware the importance of the supporting environment. An appropriate leader is able to build up an inspirational workplace through feedbacks, promotions and trainings.
